I have close family ties with Cumbria, and so have spent a lot of time in the area throughout my life. However, despite such a strong connection, it was only on a trip to Carlisle this year that I discovered this type of brickwork detailing, specific to the area. Brickmaking has been an integral part of Cumbrian history since Roman times, with techniques remaining the same until the mid-19th century. There is much comfort to be found in such consistency, but it is similarly important to remain open to change. And remembering that, no matter how many times you have visited a particular place or carried out a certain activity, there is always something new to discover.
