Coming across this sign in rural New York evoked a huge amount of nostalgia, and the vision of America that we are sold by Hollywood. A tumbleweed rolling along a deserted street is a common sight in a classic Western movie, one of many cultural symbols which are intended to capture the essence of America. Whilst the likelihood of actually coming across such a scene is tantamount to finding Hugh Grant in your local bookshop, it doesn’t lessen the longing for simpler times. The hyper saturation of colour in this sign conjures up childhood memories and a blissful nostalgia for days gone by, which inspired me to create this piece.
