I have always admired Francis Bacon and was delighted to unexpectedly stumble across an exhibition of his work at the Hugh Lane Gallery, during a long weekend in Dublin earlier in the year. The gallery also featured Bacon’s London studio in its original form, meticulously recreated using the artist’s own items which had been shipped to Ireland – including the dust! This gave an eye-opening insight into his working process, and the disorder which lay behind the brilliance. The studio’s improbable chaos was a beautiful contrast against the ordered pattern of light streaming into the studio. It is that shift of light which formed the inspiration for this piece, using Bacon’s own colour palette.
