Sargent and Fashion, which explored the fashion, identity and painting behind the unique work of John Singer Sargent, was my favourite exhibition of the year. I have long admired the work of this artist, and my work is often inspired by his practice. The Tate Britain exhibition focused on fashion as a tool to express personality and identity, with almost 60 works on display. Many of these were shown alongside the period garments featured in the portraits. The exhibition was transformative for me, opening my eyes and mind to the processes behind Singer Sargent’s acclaimed works. However, the one piece I kept returning to was the portrait of Mrs Robert Harrison (Helen Smith). Its presence captured my imagination that day, and is the inspiration behind this artwork.
