The term “fitties” finds its roots in the Norse word fitjar, which means foreshore saltings or waterside grassland. Locally to me, the Humberston Fitties is a coastal area of outstanding natural beauty, comprising of huge golden sand beaches, sand dunes and wetlands. It has been declared a site of special scientific interest due to a diverse range of plants and wildlife, including rare birds such as sanderling and knot. It is a place I visit often, and a source of ongoing inspiration. The photograph which influenced this artwork was taken this summer, with the faded hues of green shrubbery forming the perfect contrast against the boldness of the blue sky.
